Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (James Gurney Art), by James Gurney

Review

James Gurney's series of illustrated fantasy adventure stories, beginning with 1992's Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time, produced a generation raised on Gurney's highly realistic paintings of an entirely unreal subject.... Still it was no surprise to the author-artist-blogger and his long-time publisher Andrews McMeel when his recently released second volume of art instruction, Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter, became a bestseller for AMP immediately  upon its release in December 2010, selling out its 10,000-copy run in just two months.  (Mark Schulz, Publishers Weekly)Dinotopia author and plein-air painter Gurney offers a practical, well-organized, and informative handbook for artists of all levels.  (Chronogram Magazine)This is a terrific book, highly recommended not only for young artists but anyone with an interest in traditional art technique.  (Karen Haber, Locus)

I am so sorry that I waited to buy this book. I was turned off by the cover. "Why do I want to paint dinosaurs?" But this is one of the most helpful books I have found (and I have several) on the subject of color and light. James Gurney is truly a wonderful and enlightened teacher. His discussions of color mixing, lighting angles, triads, - just so many things that I have barely seen even mentioned in other art books. Even just applying a few of his recommendations has already given a new cohesiveness to my paintings. He also gives great explanations on why some things work well, often which I have discovered on my own by trial and error, now I know the reasoning behind them. For a $15 book, it will take a prominent place on my shelves. Well, actually, it won't be on my shelves, it will be opened in the studio.

Here I am an artist with three art degrees... and I never learned most of this information! My main degree was in painting and Illustration!!!! Honestly the most I learned was about cool and warm color and value - that's IT!This book is easy to grasp, pithy and organized in such a way that you can go right to the area you are interested in without having to scan the entire book. I learned more about how to use color and paint light in the hour I ravenously scanned through it than I did in all those years of college. If you wish to learn anything about painting you must have this book!It may seem such a simple subject, but how to set up a palette is one of the MOST confusing things an artist learns. Many times you just pick up a palette that someone else used and wing it until you get comfortable with it. Mr. Gurney actually takes so much of the mystery out of how to choose your palette of colors and how to work with what you have in that palette. This section ALONE is worth the price of the book! Also he explains how our vision works so we can be aware of it and make better choices in how we render color and light in our images - as well as how to pay attention to depth of field! I especially loved the comparison of a photograph and a painting from observation and how much you miss in the photo. Again, this information alone is worth the price of the book!If you are and artist looking to learn how to render an image realistically and believably, this book MUST be in your library. Mr. Gurney has taken information from many divers sources that would take another person years to gather if you could even find these out of print books and information, and he has put it all in a well-organized and easily read book that is so deeply appreciated for its clarity.Thank you, Mr. Gurney, for all your hard work. This book should become and textbook in any painting class!

This is an excellent book on color and light. It is more of a reference book than a "how-to," probably better for more experienced illustrators who just need some brushing up, or advanced amateurs who could benefit from some deeper thoughts about how lighting works. May be a little less useful to beginners who are not well-versed in art lingo, but maybe this would be a good way to learn it! I personally would have been fascinated by this when I was a child learning to make art. I find the use of the many, many, many dinosaur illustrations to be charming, and I appreciate that the author used a lot of his own (excellent) work in the book. Overall highly recommended.

This book by Dinotopia author, James Gurney, explores the realist painter's most essential tools: color and light. Mr. Gurney's many years of acclaimed oil painting experience are behind this carefully crafted study on the best way to render color and light in paintings. The book deals with color in a very practical sense, including rethinking the color wheel, mixing colors, and the history of pigments. Mr. Gurney also helps to remove some of the confusion in setting up an appropriate and workable palette.I found the lessons on sources of light, visual perception, atmospheric effects, and his explanation of how light reacts with surfaces and other elements to be both helpful and fascinating. You'll find information on gamut mapping, underpainting, glazes, and the painting of hair to name just a few. There are numerous techniques and painting tips scattered throughout the book. The various theories of color and light are demonstrated on beautiful color depictions of James Gurney's own paintings as well as the work of a number of other accomplished artists who have perfected the portrayal of color and light in their own paintings. This is a thoroughly informative and enjoyable book and I highly recommend it to any artist working to improve their own paintings.

James Gurney writes the best Instructional Books on painting color, creating pictures and thinking like an artist that are published anywhere. I have read LOTS of art books and of all of them Ii believe that only James Gurney(and Andrew Loomis) are an entire art education wrapped up in easily understood beautifully illustrated books. A year at an Art School can cost $50,000 stay in for 4 years and you are spending $200,000...All of the Gurney books (plus all of the Loomis books) will cost under $200...Moreover I guarantee that you will not learn as much, or progress as fast in any school, or art program, in the country, as you will if you faithfully read, memorize the concepts and techniques, and practice the lesson plans in Gurney's(and Loomis's) books...I grew up in a time when Higher Art Education abandoned its heritage and embraced "creativity" in the name of Abstract Expressionism(and various other isms). It betrayed young people that wanted to be artists in a fundamental way.For a long time there was no good program in American Art Schools that taught basic skills and forced young artists to learn to draw and paint before being "creative,"...I spent a lot of money looking and it was not out there. Discovering Gurney(and Loomis)was amazing and really went a long way toward fixing that.
